On Tuesday, May 31, students, alumni and honored guests gathered at the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC) for LEED into Green and Gold, a celebration of the BRIC’s LEED gold certification.
“It is important that our campus develop awareness and support for sustainable practices,” said Dr. Soraya Coley, Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) president. “We live in a closely knit ecosystem and our actions have not only had regional impact but also a statewide as well as a global one.”
The celebration kept it green with sustainable activities for guests to enjoy, such as a do-it-yourself succulent bar, a LEED trivia board as well as an informational booth teaching guests about the different kinds of waste and how to properly dispose of each.
“This is actually my first time at the BRIC. Before this event I wasn’t aware that the BRIC had these [sustainable] features. I’m trying to be environmentally friendly so I think it would be cool for [other buildings] to be eco-friendly,” said fourth-year mechanical engineering student, Noelle Guerrero.
A celebration of the BRIC’s LEED status wouldn’t be complete without a tour!
Following a speech by Dr. Coley, guests were invited to join a BRIC staff member for a one-on-one tour of the facility.
As beautiful as it is sustainable, the BRIC is full of eco-friendly hidden gems.
Highlights of the tour included 120 tubular skylights that supply the BRIC with natural lighting, automated windows in the lobby that allow outside air in to cool the facility, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified wood floors, solar panels that heat the pool and water efficient landscaping.
“From inception the facility was intended to be fully aligned with the commitment of our campus and our students to sustainability. Today we all stand proud of the sustainable features of the BRIC,” said Associated Students Inc. (ASI) Executive Director Cora Culla.
