The Children’s Center (Bldg. 116) is one of the many resources Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) students have at their disposal. As Leslie Corcoran, Enrollment & Office Coordinator explained, “We are here to support student parents.” Here are just a few of the things the center has to offer:
The Children’s Center has an Individualized Education Program (I.E.D.) to accommodate children with disabilities.
There are four full-size classrooms, approximately 75 children and personalized cubbies for each student.
Child playground amenities, including swings, slides, jungle gyms, toys and sandboxes are provided at the center.
The center accepts applications for children between the ages of two to five. However, they are currently in the process of obtaining a license that would allow them to admit children as young as 18 months.
The center is equal parts daycare and preschool. It offers both daily activities for younger children and preschool programs for the older children.
Commencement for the students moving on to kindergarten takes place at the end of the year.
Construction to expand one of the classrooms is underway. This construction will include a one-way mirror which will allow students taking child development classes to observe the children first hand.
The center offers a special summer program called Kids U. This program is open to children from the ages of six to 10. The program coordinates on-campus field trips and trips to the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC, Bldg. 42). During their visits to the BRIC, the children will take swimming classes, play sports and participate in other group class activities.
Overall, The Children’s Center is the perfect place for children. Rebecca Rivera, a liberal studies student and volunteer at the center, said, “It’s small so it feels family like.”
This family vibe is present throughout the entire center which Michele Crowder, a parent volunteer at the center for more than 20 years, knows well. “Some of my first group of kids came back to Cal Poly Pomona, now as students,” said Crowder.
