During my freshman orientation, I recall hearing my orientation leader speak about Associated Students Incorporated (ASI) and how much she enjoyed working there. Still in my high school mentality of seeking popularity, I thought to myself, “Wow, ASI sounds so cool! I’m definitely going to get involved and make a ton of friends.”

After nearly a year of anticipation and gaining eligibility, I ran for student government and served as an ASI student leader from 2015-2016. Now I work for ASI’s Marketing, Design and Public Relations (MDPR) department, implementing what I learn in my major at my job. During that time, I became friends with so many different people and worked with them to make a substantial difference in the lives of my peers.

My amazing experience in ASI affirmed my decision to work for the organization. Coming from someone who has spent the majority of his college career in the organization, here are my top five reasons why you should work for ASI.

Convenience

One of the best perks of working on campus is the convenience. As an ASI employee, you will likely work at the Bronco Student Center (BSC, Bldg. 35) or the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC, Bldg. 42), which are both located near the center of the university and within minutes of your next class. This significantly reduces the amount of time you spend in traffic between work and class and in search of a parking spot when you get to campus.

Company Culture

ASI has an excellent company culture. Everyone in the organization is extremely kind and supportive. As former Intramural Sports Supervisor Damajaha Netherly once mentioned, “ASI saw something in me that I did not see in myself at the time, and they developed me from, you know, a freshman official to a student supervisor and now to a graduate student assistant.” Everyone in ASI truly wants the best for each other.

Fun Environment

If working at ASI could be described in one word, it would be fun. ASI has a bunch of employment opportunities where you can do what you love as a part-time job. In addition to the generally fun environment, ASI hosts a ton of fun events where you will often work and interact with the campus community.

Flexibility

One of the perks of working at ASI are the flexible work hours. Even if you have an unusual schedule with large gaps between your classes, ASI is willing to work around your schedule as long as you finish your work and the required number of hours. As former Sports Clubs Supervisor Bladimir Martinez said, “ASI has supported me a lot because the one thing that they really stress on is that we’re here as students first, and so that’s always the number one priority.”

The Vision

ASI’s vision is “Enhancing the student experience.” Whether you want to work at MDPR as a Student Brand Ambassador, at the BRIC as a Personal Trainer or at the Student Government Office as a Clerical Assistant, you will be helping to provide your peers with the best possible experience at Cal Poly Pomona.

ASI is more than my initial impression of it as Associated Student Body with a budget of $8.2 million. It exists to enhance your experience and provides its employees with opportunities to gain personal and professional development. Joining ASI has been one of the best decisions I have made in college, and I highly recommend that you do too! Watch this video to see why you belong in ASI:
