My co-workers recently discovered my lack of knowledge on the subject of ’80s teen movies. After being shamed for my sins, I decided (well my co-workers decided) that I should watch more ’80s teen movies. Soon after, a certain rebellious yet misunderstood side of me emerged.
Here are just a few reasons why ’80s teen movies are awesome:
They make young viewers feel out of touch with the times for once
What’s a floppy disk?
The dancing scenes!
Oh, Duckie…
There was a movie for EVERYONE
If you were a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess or a criminal, odds are there’s a ’80s movie for you!
They make you realize there’s a ’80s teen in all of us
Especially Ferris Buller… (not me, though, I want to be Duckie. Did you see those dance moves?)
They made an entire generation of teens say “wow, they DO understand!”
Only John Hughes knows how I feel!
They gave you chills during iconic scenes
They made you gasping like a fangirl/boy when this iconic name pops up on the screen:
No, seriously, John Hughes was basically the perfect film writer of the ’80s
“Sixteen Candles“,“Pretty in Pink“, “Ferris Buller’s Day Off“, “The Breakfast Club“ and so many others! The man was a genius!
They remind us that everyone has their own version of Jake Ryan
You know it. I know it. John Hughes knows it.
No matter how old these films are, they are somehow still relevant
Same.
The goosebump-inducing endings they left us with every time
Ugh, need I say more?
