Wanderlust: (noun) a very strong or irresistible impulse to travel.

Have you contracted the wanderlust bug but not sure if you have the means to travel? No worries, I’ve got you covered.

Mr. Ramen, great place to stop by if you’re feeling hungry!

Being a college student myself, it can be tough to travel because of classes or work. However, I have devised a plan to satiate my hunger for travel and new things alike. Due to my love of travel and lack of cash flow, I have figured out a way to combine the two and still make the most of my weekends. The best part: you don’t even need a car.

Say hello to your new best friends: 1.) the Pomona Train Station and 2.) the Metrolink All-Day Pass. This pair will allow you to experience Los Angeles, eliminating the dreaded search for free parking and saving you gas. When you get to the train station, make sure that you purchase the $10 Weekend All-Day Pass. This will allow you to not only ride the train round trip, but also ride the subway system at no additional cost.

Train Station in Los Angeles

Step onto the train and let your adventure begin!

Now that I’ve gone through the technicalities, you are ready for adventure! Let me introduce you to one of my favorite LA destinations. Located on First Street, Little Tokyo encompasses the rich Japanese culture through history, traditions, art and food. I visited Little Tokyo for the first time a few months ago when it was free museum day ; in Los Angeles and have been a frequent visitor ever since.

Whether you consider yourself a history buff, foodie or wanderer-  just looking for something new, Little Tokyo is the perfect place to start your adventure.

When you first arrive, I suggest that you eat at Mr. Ramen on Central Avenue. Do not mistake the title for the microwaveable noodles that you may be accustomed to. This place is amazing and it will change your outlook on ramen forever. My personal favorite is the fried chicken ramen (two of the best things in the world-combined!). Finish it off with green tea ice cream and let your taste buds explode. Check out the menu here!

Little Tokyo background

Welcome to Little Tokyo!

Currently, there are some really cool things going on in Little Tokyo for everyone! If you’re into tattoos, check out the exhibition, Perseverance: Japanese Tattoo Tradition in a Modern World. If you’re a sport fanatic, make sure to visit this other exhibition, Dodgers: Brotherhood of the Game. Both of these are being featured at the Japanese American Museum through September 14, so you definitely have time!

I encourage everyone to go beyond their comfort zone and go somewhere new. The best part about taking the train is that you are given free range to go wherever you want. Walk around LA and experience what is around you. Take my suggestions of destinations as an outline, but do not let it keep you from doing your own thing!

Now, it’s your turn! Use #CampusCropChat on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram; and share with us your photos and experiences from traveling on a dime. I’d love to hear from you.

Happy wandering!
