Autumn’s here! That means pumpkin spice, ghouls and ghosts and of course, giving back to the community. Thanksgiving day is still a few weeks away, but that doesn’t mean we should wait to give back.

This year, give an early Thanksgiving gift to your community. In case you’re stumped for ideas, here are three ways you can give back before the holiday season.

Donate to a local school or learning center

Classrooms should be stocked up with supplies to give children the best learning experience. Often times, in communities where schools don’t receive as much funding, it is up to the parents and teachers to supply materials like crayons, markers and other craft supplies that enhance a young student’s experience in school. You can help make the lives of our future generations brighter. Not sure how to donate? Here are a list of schools in the Pomona Unified School District that you can give back to!

Donate to the Poly Pantry

Give back to Cal Poly Pomona students facing food insecurity by donating to the Poly Pantry. You can donate dry goods (such as pasta, rice and beans), ready-made meals, fresh vegetables and fruit, canned meat (like tuna, chicken and spam) and more! The Poly Pantry also accepts toiletries and personal hygiene items like toothbrushes and toothpaste, toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner and soap as donations. When donating cans, consider buying easy-to-open containers that don’t require a can opener. Contact the Poly Pantry to find out what items would be best to donate.

Volunteer your time

Giving back can be as simple as writing holiday cards to service workers or calling someone to let them know you’re thinking about them. Small gestures can make a big impact in people’s lives. From volunteering at your local animal shelters to organizing a roadside cleanup, there are plenty of opportunities for you to share your time. This fall season, grab a group of your best buds and make a day out of giving back to your community! If you don’t know where to start, try joining a community service club on campus or check out volunteermatch.org for more ideas!
