It’s been yet another year full of surprises, grand openings, grand finales and celebrity filled selfies. 2014 has proven to the world that not everything is predictable. As we say our final goodbyes to this year, we’ve highlighted some of the most talked about things that happened at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP), and in pop culture!

1. Feminism was a MAJOR theme (finally).

2014 was a great year for the ladies! Equal rights for woman was a major theme, with reoccuring topics about women’s rights, the #YesAllWomen campaign and with many male celebrities calling themselves feminists as well (because a man can be a feminist!). But really, it’s about time this was talked about so much. One of our writers wrote about how women were dominating earlier this year! Check it out here.

2. Beyonce slayed (again and again and again)

Bey killed it this year, surprising everyone with her random music video, 7/11, showcasing that she looks amazing even when she’s just “chillin.” Plus she dropped more songs with an ultimate compilation of her record blowing, self titled album last year. Oh, and she went on tour with her husband, Jay-Z, and of course it grossed OVER $1 million in ticket sales. All hail Queen B!

3. The BRIC opened!

After much anticipation, the Bronco Recreational and Intramural Complex finally opened and did not disappoint! Features include a 51 ft. rock wall, tons of cardio equipment, weight lifting stations, indoor basketball courts, racquetball courts, and indoor soccer court! 4. Nicki Minaj happened in a big way.

Nicki Minaj proved to everyone that not only was she talented, but her newest album, The Pink Print showed a different side of her. With songs like Feeling Myself and Bed of Lies, critics called her new sound, “what hip hop has been missing!” You go Nicki!

5. Taylor Swift stabbed a cake.

Taylor Swift was the epitome of girl power this year when her album, 1989 dropped and broke record after record. She also made headlines with the male counterparts that were cast in her music video for “Blank Space.” Check out the records she broke this year, plus other top artists of 2014 here.

6. Ellen Degener’s selfie broke Twitter

Ellen DeGeneres actually shut down Twitter because of this epic selfie that she posted from the 2014 Oscars. With huge stars surrounding her, no wonder it was such a huge hit!

7. How I Met Your Mother ended

We finally found out the fate of Ted, Barney, Robin, Marshall and Lily. Although there was some criticism about the ending, the show had a long running time of 9 seasons!

8. Innovation Brew Works opened!

It finally happened! Innovation Brew Works opened and not only provided students with a great place to enjoy a beer, but also a learning experience for students at the Collin’s College. The brewery now features craft beer and there’s even a beer named after University President Ortiz!

9. A few people found their 15 minutes of fame.

This little boys interview took the social media world by storm with his adorable charm. Meet Noah Ritter, who became an instant YouTube classic.

A young man working at Target, who’s fame blew up instantly on Twitter after a customer tweeted a picture of him. Alex proves the undeniable truth that the power of the Twitterverse is nothing to be taken lightly.

Isabella, a young girl visiting Disney World was no match for Beauty and the Beast’s villain, Gaston. As he tells her that he will marry Belle and that women belong in the kitchen, Isabella fearlessly tells him that the Beast will get him and that he will NEVER marry Belle! This hilarious video is not only adorable, but also a great ode to girl power.

10. Man Buns finally received the recognition that they deserved (so did beards).

2014 was unapologetically the year of the man bun and the beard! Men were dressing up their beard and even decorating them for the holidays! Plus, even celebrities were seen rocking the man bun.

11. The epic elevator fight between Solange and Jay-Z

Everyone knew about the elevator fiasco of 2014, featuring Jay-Z and Solange Knowles. Although Queen B was in the elevator too, she doesn’t seem to try and stop the fight. Rumor had it, that Solange was just backing her sister up! We will never know for sure, but it was extremely entertaining to watch nonetheless.

12. Kim and Kanye tied the knot

Even if you’ve not a huge fan of this twosome, you were aware that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West tied the knot in May. E! aired the entire phenomenon of the wedding and marriage, which is still going strong-unlike Kim’s other relationships…

13. We said goodbye to a dear friend, Robin Williams

One of the most devastating moments that happened this year, the world had to say an unexpected goodbye to actor and comedian, Robin Williams.

14. Ariana Grande took her hair out of a ponytail..and it was a big deal.

Known for her “half up-half down” hair do,’ Ariana wore her hair down for once and everyone went crazy over it. Grande also made headlines with her new album, My Everything, featuring hit single, “Love Me Harder,” ft. The Weeknd.

15. The relaunch of the ASI website!

We relaunched our website for the Associated Students Inc. (ASI), The Campus Crop, and launched the Campus Recreation site! We think it looks amazing! With mobile friendly features and an all new streamlined look, it’s easier than ever to be on the up and up for all things ASI at Cal Poly Pomona!

16. Jimmy  Fallon took over the Tonight Show

It finally happened! The Saturday Night Love (SNL), veteran Jimmy Fallon took over The Tonight Show as the third host in February. With witty jokes, hilarious skits featuring big stars and The Roots as his band, The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon has proved to be exactly what we’ve been wanting!

16. Jimmy Fallon and Justin Timberlake reminded us how much we love them.

The perfect combination that is Jimmy and Justin did not disappoint when they did a short skit on The Tonight Show, and sang Jumper by Third Eye Blind. #BestFriendsForever

18. Ortiz retired

After serving as Cal Poly Pomona’s President for 11 years, President J. Michael Ortiz announced that he was retiring. Famous for his “Monday Message,” CPP students will say goodbye to Ortiz and hello to new President, Soraya M. Coley. in 2014.

19. ALS challenge

In support of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often referred to as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease, the Ice Bucket Challenged was created. The reason behind the challenge was to promote awareness of the disease. Even celebrities got into it, and through the challenge, the ALS Association was able to raise over $115 million since July 2014.

20. George Clooney got married

The ultimate bachelor, George Clooney, married Amal Alamuddin, a London-based lawyer, in Venice, Italy. With a beautiful ceremony with about 100 guests, the couple tied the knot in September this year.
