Though summer is a blessing in many different ways, I think we can all agree when I say its downfall is the triple digit degree weather that accompanies our beloved break. I, for one, can always be found in front of a fan, in a pool, at the beach or in bed trying to nap the heat away (instead drowning in my own sweat). Fortunately, we have the perfect remedy for this ridiculous heat—the hero we deserve: ice cream.

Here are a few of the best ice cream places in the area for the next time you need a quick cool down (which will probably in ten minutes):

Grandma Pucci’s Homemade Ice Cream

Check out that triple scoop dream. Grandma Pucci’s is the first of its kind and is conveniently located at the Chino Spectrum, a very short drive away from school. Grandma Pucci’s prides itself on its homemade ice cream, which you can actually watch being made in a glass room in the store. What’s unique about this shop is that the employees switch out flavors for new creations every few weeks, so you’ll never get tired of what’s in the case. Of course, the popular flavors have a more permanent spot on the menu. My go-to’s are Banana Graham, Blueberry Pie and Gimme S’more. As if that isn’t awesome enough, they have a special deal every single day of the week—shoot for $2 two scoop Tuesdays!

Afters Ice Cream

Afters Ice Cream has definitely gained popularity in the last year with its yummy flavors, creative branding and hip atmosphere. Afters says it best: “Leave your diet here.” With flavors like Cookie Butter, Milk & Cereal, Vietnamese Coffee, Jasmine Milk Tea and so much more, who knows if you’ll even find your diet wherever you left it after you’re through with this place? The most popular thing about Afters is their milky bun creation, which is simply a glazed donut with your choice of ice cream stuffed inside. A little too sweet for me, but a simple scoop in a waffle cone is perfect for this kind of heat. Afters is located at The Shoppes in Chino Hills, which is also home to some awesome restaurants. Strategically placed, you can always get Afters AFTER a dinner with friends. My motto is: “There’s always room for ice cream because it melts between the food in your stomach.” Eloquent, I know.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream
Handels Homemade Ice Cream and Yogurt - Redondo Beach CA United States Deep dish apple pie and graham central station
Located in Upland, Handel’s is a bit more of a drive than Grandma Pucci’s or Afters, though it is well worth the travel. The ice cream is homemade and you can definitely taste that when you’re given your order. The ice cream here is outrageously creamy and delicious, and you’ll find yourself taking the drive here late at night when your college student cravings are going wild. If you give it a chance, definitely order the Graham Central Station; you won’t regret it.

It’s-It

These places sound great, but you’re low on gas and you’re trying to avoid the crazy lines of customers trying to get the goods these places are known for. I get it. Hopefully you have enough gas in the tank to get you to the nearest Walmart, where they sell It’s-It, a San Francisco favorite. Once you open the package, it looks like any boring and underwhelming Klondike, but wait until you take that first bite. Vanilla ice cream sandwiched between two oatmeal cookies, covered in chocolate? Yes, please. No more long lines or long drives. Plus, the package will last you about a week (or if you’re me, a few hours). Plus, most Walmarts are open 24 hours a day, and I know you’re getting mad cravings at three in the morning. Problem solved; you’re welcome.
