With Earth Month on the mind, it is the perfect time to reflect on our environmental actions, and let’s face it—we can all do a little better when it comes to our eco-friendly habits. Now, we aren’t asking you to do a complete 180 and install solar panels on your roof or trade in your ride for a Toyota Prius, but here are some of the small changes you can implement in your daily life to give the environment a little extra love.

Make your lunch eco-friendly

Trade in your brown paper bag lunches for a reusable lunch bag! Not only is it more eco-friendly and stylish to carry around a colorful lunch bag across campus, but it will also keep your lunch cold since many bags are insulated! Start shopping with Bed Bath and Beyond’s selection of reusable lunch bags. While you’re at it, you can also leave your Ziplocs and aluminum foil at home, because reusable snack bags and Bee’s Wrap reusable sandwich wraps are on the market for all your sustainable lunch needs.

Make your coffee eco-friendly

Good news for coffee lovers: there are so many ways to make your favorite morning pick-me-up less harmful to the environment! Invest in an insulated travel mug to keep your latte warm for hours. Target has a nice selection of insulated travel mugs, but our favorite is the S’ip by S’well vacuum insulated tumbler that comes in a variety of colors and designs, you might want to purchase more than one! For bonus eco-friendly points on your brew, switch out your plastic K-Cups for the My K-Cup Universal Reusable Coffee Filter, which is compatible with all Keurig coffee makers!

Switch from plastic to reusable water bottles

Many of us have made the switch and purchased a Hydro Flask, and while we still adore the durability and quality of our flasks, there are many alternatives to the brand name that can save you a few bucks and keep your water icy cold. Check out Klean KanteenKLEAR Bottle or Takeya for more stainless steel bottle options.

Ditch the paper towels

Perhaps one of the biggest culprits of wastefulness is the overuse of the single-use paper towels (sorry Brawny man). Switch out the roll for a stack of linen napkins, which are reusable and provide the illusion of fanciness in your living space. Amazon has a large selection of colors and counts of linen napkins so you can put that Prime Student membership to good use!

Switch to LED light bulbs

Here’s a bright idea, unscrew your incandescent light bulbs and switch them out for some LED bulbs! This easy switch will save your energy consumption—about 80% to be exact. Your electricity bill and carbon footprint will thank you. Check out Home Depot’s selection of LED bulbs here.

Purchase an eco-friendly phone case

Yes, they exist! Support the eco-friendly brand Pela, which creates quality phone cases for both Apple and Android devices that are made out of plant-based material. Since the cases are produced with low-impact manufacturing and packaged without plastic, you can feel good purchasing a colorful, speckled case engraved with inspirational phrases ranging from “believe in better,” and “lead the way” to “save the waves.” Get inspired by reading their story and browsing the shop here.
