Truth is, social distancing is getting harder and harder each day.

It’s even harder for those of us who are unlucky (or lucky, depending on which way you see it!) enough to be separated from our significant others for who-knows-how-long. We get it—it’s basically a long-distance relationship. You’re used to spending so much time together, and you’re glad they’re healthy and safe, but you really feel the lack of contact.

If you’re missing those spontaneous ice cream dates, movie marathon nights, bad karaoke sessions or just being in each others’ space, don’t panic! You can still do all these things and more—virtually! Check out these virtual date ideas, so you can stay connected with the people you love.

Watch a movie

If you have Netflix, you can watch movies and shows together in real time using browser extension Netflix Party. For other streaming services like Prime VideoHuluHBODisney+ or even YouTube, try downloading applications like Kast (free with paid upgrades) or TwoSeven (monthly membership) to screen share and chat. ZoomMicrosoft Teams and Discord also accommodate screen sharing and video calls, so if you have any of these apps then you’re all set to snuggle down and enjoy the show.

Share a meal

You can’t eat from the same plate if you’re not in the same place, but nothing’s stopping you from cooking together and being in each others’ company through video chatting! Challenge each other to make the same dish, and see who makes it better, or cook each others’ favorite foods. Get out of your pajamas and dress up as if you were on a real date!

If you’re using Zoom, you can even change your video background to something else to ~set the vibe~.

Go to an amusement park

It sounds cheesy but can be a lot of fun to do virtually. YouTube has an interestingly wide variety of first-person roller coaster videos, so with a big enough screen and a little imagination, you’ll almost be able to feel your stomach dropping and the wind in your hair! Use programs with the same screen-sharing/video-chatting capabilities for this fun little date.

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to have that stock rom-com moment where you hold on to each other before the big drop, but we promise not to tell anyone if you scream.

Take a tour

A lot of parks and museums offer virtual tours of their premises and exhibits, perfect for the adventure-oriented, fun-loving couple. Best of all, they’re free! Take a day trip to France at the Louvre or stop by New York for the Museum of Modern Art. Or, stay local and visit LA’s very own Getty Museum, all from the comfort of your own home. Drop by Good Housekeeping’s website for a more detailed list of choices including zoos and theme parks.

Pro tip: take a screenshot of your favorite part of the tour, and edit your photos over top of it. It’ll be like you were really there. #DateNight!

Game with each other

Games are everyone’s best friends lately, as seen by the Club Penguin classic and Animal Crossing: New Horizons frenzy. These two are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to online multiplayer games! Lately, we’re liking Overcooked 2, a fun co-op cooking game playable on Xbox OnePS4PC, and Nintendo Switch. We’re warning you: this game is highly addictive and chaotic and might make or break your relationship!

Designated Date Night

And finally, the best way to connect with your S.O. is to make time for them. We’re talking real quality (virtual) face-to-face time, not just a quick text in the morning and before bed. Set aside specific times to dedicate to being with each other, even if just for a couple hours. Whether you decide to have dinner together over Zoom or battle each other in Overcooked 2, this is a surefire way to avoid losing touch with your partner when you’re not together.

Even if you’re a single pringle and ready to mingle, or you’re just not into dating, all of these activities are perfect to do with friends and even family. It’s more important than ever to avoid cabin fever and stay socially connected through these times, so take advantage of whatever time you have to spend with others!

We want to see photos from your date nights or friend dates! Post your edits and photos using the hashtag #CampusCropChat on FacebookTwitter and Instagram and tag us @asicpp.
