With any quarter system university, it isn’t uncommon to find dozens of stressed students at a time during week 10. That’s why Associated Students Inc. (ASI) makes it a point to help students at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) relieve stress through various activities such as yoga, massages, puppy therapy, paint night and more!

On Monday, Nov. 28, ASI held Hand Lettering Art Night in the Games Room Etc. (Bldg. 35-1110) for students interested in learning the ways of calligraphy, typography and more! Students received instruction from third-year graphic design student Jocelyn Chung, whose passion knows no limit when it comes to hand lettering.

Participants practice on worksheets before moving on to a bigger project.

The hand lettering enthusiast first fell in love with lettering as a home-schooled kindergartner and decided she wanted to do something with the hobby career-wise once she started high school.

“I’ve done a hand lettering workshop two years in a row at a summer camp for teenagers in Germany, so it was cool being able to do it again here at CPP,” Chung said.

Stefan Kunz, Joshua Noom, Jessica Hische are just a few big influencers Chung cited in regards to her type. She also created her own work of art during the workshop and gave it away to a lucky Bronco in attendance!

As the night went on, students began to get the hang of their hand lettering and received bristol paper and canvases to create their very own masterpiece. From inspirational quotes to holiday greetings, from the names of loved ones to cute floral designs, everyone’s hand lettering was remarkable in its own, unique way.

“This was a really nice way to distract ourselves from the stress of homework, projects and finals,” fifth-year graphic design student Tony Andrade stated. “I’ve always been exposed to hand lettering before, but it was a lot of fun being able to relax and do it leisurely.”

Fifth-year graphic design major Ciera Maher, who heard about the event from a friend, called the night a fun experience she would recommend to her friends should it happen again next quarter.

“This is kind of hard,” Maher laughed, “but it’s cool being able to do this with friends and just chill before everything gets really chaotic next week during finals.”

To relieve stress even more, participants were given free Kind bars and finals packages, complete with pencils, treats and more to prepare students for the upcoming week.

Students stuffed themselves silly with Kind bars as they lettered the night away.

Students enjoyed the rest of the night joking with their friends, getting to know new people and learning about the surprising art that is hand lettering.

“I really think anyone can do this; you don’t have to have nice penmanship to letter,” Chung told the crowd. “It just takes a lot of practice, and I’m positive you all can do it!”
