Some people blame social media. Others blame the pandemic. Regardless of the reason, mental illness is on the rise and is said to affect nearly 50% of the world’s population.

Mental health challenges can range from the stress of upcoming exams, to anxiety that interferes with one’s performance at work, success in school, and even their relationships with friends and family. Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) students have the opportunity to participate in a unique program that will teach them how to recognize signs someone may need help and how to support the mental health of people they care about. Whether or not we experience mental health challenges, we all have mental health, and it’s important that we learn how to care for our minds just like we care for our bodies.

Through the ASI CPP-hosted Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course, students will participate in a blended-learning program on how to identify behavior associated with mental illness, how best to support someone with these signs, as well as how to cope with one’s mental health struggles. The program emphasizes communicating with empathy—one of life’s most valuable skills for building strong leaders, teams, and relationships.

The MHFA training, which is available to CPP students for only $24 (that’s 85% off the typical price of $170 offered by outside providers), follows the Mental Health First Aid Action Plan: A.L.G.E.E.

  • APPROACH, assess for risk of suicide or harm, and assist
  • LISTEN nonjudgmentally
  • GIVE reassurance and information
  • ENCOURAGE appropriate professional help
  • ENCOURAGE self-help and other support strategies
