“First Date” by Toro y Moi
This throwback instrumental still gives us butterflies. Whether you’re going on your first date or 50th, this pure, twinkly melody from Toro y Moi will bring you back to that moment of nervous, awkward, teenage innocence and being awe-struck by seeing your crush all fancied up for the first time.
“Be My Baby” by The Ronettes
This classic, iconic love song was named one of the best songs of the 1960s by NME, Time and Pitchfork. It makes us feel fuzzy and warm on the inside. You might recognize it from the opening scene of Martin Scorsese’s “Mean Streets,” which was also named number one on “The 30 Greatest Rock & Roll Movie Moments.”
“Orange Color Queen” by Ty Segall
*Cries* Ty Segall, king of the 21st century American garage rock scene, took a break from his usual raw and grimy sound for a sweet and slow love song about his wife, Denee on his self-titled album. Segall told NPR Music, “I’ve written her many songs, but I think this is my favorite…I rarely write songs like this, because it is so easy to sound disingenuous, but I think this one is pretty good.” *Cries more*
“The Ways” by Khalid ft. Swae Lee
We can’t stop listening to this banger from Marvel’s “Black Panther: The Album (Music from and Inspired By).” Khalid’s polite vocals mixed with Swae Lee’s youthful voice and catchy beats by Sounwave and BADBADNOTGOOD makes us feel like hopping into a convertible and driving down PCH in the summer with our loved one.
“Green is the Colour” by Pink Floyd
This is one of Pink Floyd’s most underrated songs off of the even more underrated soundtrack, “More.” Right off the bat, David Gilmour’s quiet, gentle voice manages to grab a hold of our hearts with the lyrics: “Heavy hung the canopy of blue / Shade my eyes and I can see you / White was the light / That shines through the dress that you wore.”
“Outside” by TOPS
This tender song from Canadian indie rock band, TOPS was released in 2014, but serves us some ’80s prom night realness. Cue the fog, disco balls, white tuxedos and puffy dresses!
“Champagne Coast” by Blood Orange
Dev Hynes, better known as Blood Orange, undoubtedly has one of the most angelic voices of today’s music scene. “Champagne Coast” is the classic modern love song that makes us feel excited but also super relaxed at the same time. AllMusic called it “fashionably slick, altogether tragic, and deceptively beautiful.”
“The OOZ” by King Krule
Archy Marshall’s passionate voice, hazy guitar and lyrics (“I don’t know why / I search for you / Could we align? / Could we meet here? / Until the end of time”) makes us want to melt and turn into ooz. If you like this song, listen to his full album, The OOZ, which Pitchfork calls “timeless” and “the richest and most immersive album the London singer-songwriter has made yet.”
“Turn Around” by Charlie Megira and the Bet She’an Valley Hillbillies
The late Charlie Megira, a surf rock/rockabilly artist from Israel, offered such a unique and nostalgic vibe in his songs that reminds us of ’50s and ’60s rock ‘n’ roll. This track from his band, Charlie Megira and the Bet She’an Valley Hillbillies, adds a twist of romance to a distorted, lazy guitar sound, similar to Santo and Johnny’s “Sleepwalk.” Listening to this song will reaffirm your love for your S/O and give you sweet dreams during a night’s rest.
“Fluff” by Black Sabbath
When you think of Black Sabbath, one of the most influential bands to rock and metal, you most likely do not think of romance. But “Fluff,” a heavenly instrumental, reveals the band’s softer side. It’s the perfect song to listen to in nature, whether that be at the beach or even on a scenic drive with your sweetheart.
“Harvest Moon” by Neil Young
We’ve saved the best for last! Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” captures every essence of romance and beauty in five minutes. Genius says this song “celebrates longevity and fidelity in relationships, both in its lyrics and in a truly beautiful melody.” This timeless track is so simple, yet so genuine and fits any situation that you and your true love find yourself in (but especially in situations underneath the moon and the stars).
