While the college journey may pose distinct obstacles for students with disabilities, Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) strives to create an accessible and inclusive  campus environment for all. At the heart of this effort is the Disability Resource Center (DRC) which provides an abundance of services, accommodations, and specialized support to empower students with disabilities to thrive. In this blog post, we will explore the wide-ranging resources offered by the DRC and how they work to create an equitable learning experience on campus.

Students with any type of disability, whether visible or non-apparent, are encouraged to register with the DRC office. The registration process involves meeting with a disability specialist to discuss individual needs, submitting disability documentation, and identifying reasonable accommodations. Registering allows the DRC to partner with students in developing an accommodation plan tailored to their situation. Some key accommodations and services coordinated by the DRC include:

Registering with the DRC opens a wealth of opportunities and resources for students. The DRC offers a wide range of events, programs, and services tailored to meet the diverse needs of its registered students. The DRC maintains a strong commitment to confidentiality throughout the registration process and ongoing support. By working closely and discreetly with everyone, the DRC develops an understanding of each student’s unique needs and provides the necessary accommodations to support their success.

In addition to the accommodations offered, the DRC provides disability-informed academic advising catered to support participants and their needs. The DRC’s Academic Advisor works closely with students to assist them in completing degree planning tools, consulting on course selections, and many more. This specialized advising is designed to supplement the services offered by the student’s academic department and college.

The DRC hosts multiple programs dedicated to supporting and enriching the experiences of students with disabilities. Established in 1997, the Achievement, Retention and Commitment to Higher Education Success (ARCHES) program provides academic and personal support services from the time of acceptance through graduation. Currently, they serve 150 students and are committed to promoting educational equity for students who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education such as first-generation, low-income, and disabled students.

Bronco Access Mentor (BAM) is another educational program facilitated by the DRC. BAM aims to provide a supportive environment to foster student success, engagement, and retention. BAM mentors work closely with DRC students to develop essential skills such as time management, effective studying techniques, and advising guidance.

To further enhance the support available, the DRC coordinates Student Wellbeing & Support Extended Hours in collaboration with various campus departments during the school year. The program gives students after-hours access to key resources like Counseling and Psychological Services, Survivor Advocacy Services, and the Bronco Wellness Center. Both in-person and virtual options are available which give students flexibility to connect with help and accommodations they need throughout the busy semester.

CPP has adopted the Accessible Technology Initiative (ATI) that focuses on supporting all students with technology and computing needs. From software and hardware customization to training and support, the ATI makes technology as accessible as possible. One of the most useful tools provided by ATI is the Kurzweil 3000 text-to-speech software. This software converts text to high-quality audio and can significantly improve reading speed and focus for users. The best part? Any student with a CPP email address can use Kurzweil 3000 for free.

Having a disability should never be a barrier to academic success at CPP. Leveraging the extensive programs and services available through the DRC, ARCHES, BAM, and ATI set up students to thrive. With the proactive support of these specialized resources, Broncos with disabilities can pursue their academic and extracurricular passions without any limitations.
