Commuting to campus

If you’re close enough to campus, you may have the option of walking or biking to class instead of having to schedule your travels by using public transportation or worrying about parking when driving yourself to school. Either way, there are three things you need to keep in mind!

1. Be safe
When riding a bike, always wear a helmet. Just because helmets aren’t required by law past the age of 18, doesn’t mean you’re too old to wear one. A good helmet can be purchased for under $13 and save you a lot of medical trouble. Also, it’s a good idea to wear close-toed shoes.

Whether on two wheels or two feet, be cautious when traveling at night. There are precautions you can take for either situation. Cyclists should use lights, reflectors and bright clothing. Avoid walking at night if you can find another way, such as the campus shuttle.

2. Be prepared
Carry items with you that could come in handy in an emergency. It’s a good idea to always have a charged cell phone in case you need to get a hold of someone. Program your phone with the University Police phone number (909-869-3070) into your cell phone. It also helps to keep a flashlight with you too.

Bikers, keep reflectors, lights, a bike pump and tools in your backpack, especially when traveling for more than a mile from your destination.

3. Be aware
Always be conscious of your surroundings. Don’t talk on the phone or listen to your headphones if it will distract you. This is especially true for bikers.

And of course, remember to lock-up your bike on a designated bike rack; you never know what could happen when you are not watching your personal items.
