Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) celebrated democracy for National Voter Registration Day. To empower students before the pivotal midterm elections, a variety of CPP departments, including ASI Student Government and Bronco Events and Activities Team (BEAT) hosted an upbeat and lively voter registration drive on campus under sunny skies. Electric energy filled the air as eager students flooded the University Park, motivated to fulfill their civic duty on this important, commemorative day.

“Registering students to vote and increasing our voter registration numbers on campus is very important,” said Michelle Viorato, CPP Interim Assistant Director for Government and External Affairs.

“We want to make sure our students are prepared and excited for the upcoming 2024 elections that are taking place.”

Associated Students Inc. (ASI) staff and university directors operated registration booths to assist students with voter registration. At the booths, students could easily register to vote in under ten minutes on their phones. Their hands-on support made voter registration accessible and seamless for the CPP student body.

“I passed by the event not knowing the occasion and decided to fill out the voter registration form—it was surprisingly easy!” said Sara Severova, a CPP student who registered to vote for the first time.

The festive atmosphere reflected the civic spirit of the day. Registered students received commemorative gifts, lunch vouchers, and access to the grand petting zoo. The lively energy of the University Park embodied the pride and engagement National Voter Registration Day aims to inspire.

By the end of the day, many new CPP students were registered and ready to vote. For many first-time voters, it was an empowering moment to join our democracy officially.

National Voter Registration Day arrived at a pivotal moment to mobilize young voters. With hot-button issues from reproductive rights to climate change on the ballot this November, it was the ideal time to engage students.

“We want to make sure that students on campus and in the San Gabriel Valley are ready to make their voices count,” Viorato emphasized.

National Voter Registration Day made its mark on the Cal Poly Pomona campus, leaving students energized and equipped to raise their voices this election season. After the rousing success of the registration drive, it’s clear Broncos are ready and eager to exercise their civic power at the polls this November. If the infectious campus spirit on full display is any indication, this generation of voters is prepared to shape political outcomes now and for years to come.
