Finding Dory
“Finding Dory” is the sequel to “Finding Nemo”. This time, however, we follow Dory, a fish with short-term memory loss who is looking for her family. This movie is somehow a tear-jerker and lots of fun too! Dory is voiced by none other than the hilarious Ellen Degeneres.
Sully
“Sully” is based on the events that unfolded during what would later be known as The Miracle on The Hudson. The movie stars Tom Hanks as Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger who with the help of his co-pilot Jeff Skiles, portrayed by Aaron Eckhart, safely guided a plane into the Hudson River after an engine failure. The story does a masterful job of showing the audience the effects of the crash on Sully and the investigations which followed.
Captain America: Civil War
The trailer made me squeal like a nerd, THE TRAILER! The movie itself is about the government trying to keep all superheroes in check after the events of “The Avengers”. This decision splits up the heroes into two teams, one led by Captain America, portrayed by Chris Evans, and the other led by Iron Man, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr.
Moana
Disney was on FIRE this year and “Moana” is no exception. The movie follows the story of Moana, voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, who must team up with Maui, voiced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, to fend off a curse that was cast on Moana’s island. And this being Disney means one thing: the soundtrack is amazing.
Moonlight
OK, let’s see if I can hold back tears long enough to write this. “Moonlight” follows the story of young, black man Chiron from his childhood to adulthood, during which he must deal with his drug-abusing mother, the struggles of living in a rough neighborhood and the constant bullying he receives for being homosexual. Chiron is portrayed by three actors; each actor representing a different part of the character’s life: Alex Hibbert, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes.
Arrival
Every year has a flagship sci-fi movie and this is it. “Arrival” follows Louise Banks, played by Amy Adams, who is an expert in linguistics. Banks’ mission is to try to communicate with aliens who have recently arrived on Earth. Ultimately, the story deals with communication and how in the face of adversity, the world must learn to work together instead of apart.
The Jungle Book
A live action film for the ages. This rendition of the classic follows Mowgli,portrayed by Neel Sethi, who must leave the jungle after he becomes hunted by Shere Khan, voiced by Idris Elba, a tiger out to kill him. Not only are the story and characters amazing, but the visual effects are good enough to make “Avatar” jealous.
La la Land
What do you get when you put a jazz pianist played by Ryan Gosling and an actress played by Emma Stone in a romantic, comedic musical set in Los Angeles? Yep, you guessed it, a timeless love story with an awesome soundtrack.
Southside With You
It’s almost time to say goodbye to Barack Obama and what better way than by watching a movie based on Barack and Michelle Obama‘s first date. Mr. Obama is portrayed by Parker Sawyers and Tika Sumpter portrays Mrs. Obama, and it is difficult to find a better acting duo in a film this year.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them
More Harry Potter?! Eh, kind of. At the center of this story is Newt Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, who must find magical creatures set loose in New York. This story adds on to the Harry Potter universe by exploring the American region of the wizarding world.
Star Wars: Rogue One
It’s Star Wars. I mean do you need any other reason to watch this movie? This movie is a prequel to “Star Wars: A New Hope” and explores the story of how the plans to the Death Star were acquired. At the head of the pack is Jyn Erso, portrayed by Felicity Jones, who must assist the rebels in stealing the plans.
