Embarking on a new journey as a first-year college student is a mix of excitement, nervousness, and anticipation. While current Cal Poly Pomona (CPP) students may have time in the summer to relax, a new herd of Broncos have come to campus. An orientation hosted by the university and ASI throughout June welcomed hundreds of new students. The annual orientation aims to assist students in their transition to our university.

ASI Brand Ambassador, Robert Aceret, explains the benefits orientation brings to first-year students. “The first few weeks of college are strange because it’s a new environment and everyone adapts at their own pace, so it is a good way to help them prepare and meet more people who may be feeling the same way. I myself still managed to maintain contact with a friend that I met during my orientation. Ultimately, I think it gives them a nice feel of what the campus is like before the year goes into full swing.”

Each day was packed with informative sessions that covered a range of essential topics which included academic advising, student support services, campus safety, and extracurricular opportunities. Students were also taken on guided tours throughout the campus that showcased the buildings and resources available to students.

Yazmin Jimenez, a first-year Construction Engineering and Management student, says

“The orientation was helpful because it gave us a tour around the campus and it showed us how all the programs work here and the different colleges.”

Besides the informative sessions, the university ensured that the orientation had a touch of fun and camaraderie. A variety of interactive activities and team-building exercises were organized to promote inclusivity and foster a sense of community.

“It was a good experience going around meeting people and doing activities,” says first-year Biochemistry student, Sean Z.

For ASI members, orientation gives them the opportunity to meet new students while also informing them about ASI and sharing their personal experiences at CPP. ASI Brand Ambassador Julie Lascano says, “I love the punch card activity with the ASI Pop-Up tables where students walk around to tables featuring different ASI departments. It’s a fun way to give students a chance to ask any questions that cater to their specific interests and needs.” Lascano added, “I also just absolutely love talking to students and helping in any way I can.”

Through the collaborative efforts of ASI and the university, the orientation was able to assist our first-year and transfer students in their transition to CPP. With their newfound knowledge and connections, incoming students are now prepared to embark on their academic pursuits and embrace the enriching experiences that await them in the fall semester.
