Living in southern California, we are used to 80 degree winter days, drinking iced coffee year-round and going coat-less in the dead of winter. Even though we are grateful for our average of 284 days of sunshine a year, sometimes we want to turn up the AC, grab a mug of chamomile tea and pretend it is winter outside. So, if a rare gloomy day comes along or you’re just feeling in a winter mood, here are our artist recommendations to accompany your chilly “winter” day.
Perfume Genius
The fragile and beautiful sounds of singer/songwriter Mike Hadreas are sure to have you feeling like cuddling up under a fluffy blanket during a cold night in. This Washington-based artist’s songs are fueled by recovery, pride and figuring out being in love. Check out our pick from this artist, “Die 4 U.”
The Oh Hellos
If a more folk sound makes you feel like you want to relish in everything winter, give The Oh Hellos a listen. This Texas-based sibling duo create dramatic folk sounds that will make you feel like you’re traveling through a brisk mountain range. The duo recently released two EPs, “Notos” and “Eurus,” both inspired by Greek mythology. Check out our pick, the title track off the new EP, “Notos.”
Bon Iver
If you thought we could make it through this list without referencing the king of moody winter music, think again. We cannot help but reminisce on Justin Vernon’s classics such as “Holocene” and “For Emma,” but his most recent album, “22, A Million” provides a new and more electric take on his classic sound. Here is our current fave, “00000 Million.”
James Vincent McMorrow
After growing in popularity by covering the well-known hit “Higher Love,” this Irish singer/songwriter has continued to create soulful yet mellow music that is easy on the ears. Perfect for late night study sessions or driving in the rain, James Vincent McMorrow is a must on your favorite winter playlist. Listen to our pick, “Cavalier” below.
The Head and the Heart
This Pacific northwest based group recently brought their indie sounds to Coachella. Some tunes such as their latest “City of Angels” sound a little more alternative, but many of their older songs have a more melodic feel. Give “Rivers and Roads” a listen to this winter.
