Keeping it class-y at Cal Poly Pomona

Keeping it class-y at Cal Poly Pomona

Look at your schedule for next quarter. Are you pumped about the classes you’re going to take? Adding one class that sparks your interest is a perfect way to relieve the stresses of your other classes. Although I am an Apparel Merchandising and Management student, I’ve taken a wide assortment of classes so far. With so many courses to choose from, you’re sure to have a schedule you’ll love in no time!

Active classes:
KIN 117A: Kickboxing.  The Kinesiology and Health Promotion department offers a variety of one-unit classes for you to get your workout on. If you love group exercise classes at the gym, why not receive credit for it? I enjoyed this class because I was able to learn the correct punching technique (for punching the air, of course.)

DAN 290A: Cultural Performance Series. It may take two to tango, but you can learn all the right moves in this class. My favorite part of this class was the final exam. While other classes require a scantron and hours of studying, for this class you can simply dress up and dance the routine that has been taught to you. Prerequisites: Undergraduate Standing.

Science classes: GSC 116: Introduction to Astronomy. Do you love to star gaze? You can explore the elements of the night sky through learning about the dynamics of the solar system and the galaxies beyond. One exciting assignment in this class lets you track the sun and moon’s movement in the sky. Fulfills GE Area B1.

PHY 303: The Universe in Ten Weeks. This class investigates answers to questions that often spark curiosity such as how the universe began.  Fulfills GE Synthesis Area B5. Prerequisites: Junior or Senior Standing.

Creative Classes: MU 101: Music Appreciation. Pump up the jams! In this class, you can develop skills of listening to music from various cultures. Fulfills GE Area C1.

EWS 280: Community Service Learning: Devote a few hours out of your week to mentoring or tutoring others with local community organizations.  I enjoyed this class because I was able to help younger students at the Mexican American Student Association (M.A.S.A.) center with their homework. It was incredibly rewarding to see the difference I was able to make throughout the quarter. Fulfills GE Area E.

Just for fun: HRT 315: Wines, Beers, and Spirits. Sure you may enjoy a glass of vino, but do you know where it comes from? In this class, you can study wine grapes, beer making and distillation of spirits. You must be at least 21-years old and there is a product fee required.

ENG 499: Special Topics for Upper Division Students. Escape to Hogwarts for a few hours and cover all topics related to witchcraft and wizardry. This class is devoted to all things Harry Potter, so make sure to brush up on the books and movies before the class begins.  Prerequisite: Permission of Instructor.

TH 208: Introduction to Film and American Culture. Grab the popcorn! In this class, you can watch movies of all genres, learn methods of film production and the impact of film on society. Fulfills GE Area C1.

While working toward a degree, it’s easy to be laser-focused on only getting the classes you need to graduate. However, your college experience is what you make of it, and adding a fun class each quarter is a great way to bring some variety to your years at CPP.
