The 10 Best Cosmic Movies Ever

The 10 Best Cosmic Movies Ever

cosmic madness
This Friday’s Midnight Madness event (link) is cosmic-themed, and it’s going to be totally out of this world.

To get you in the mood for a space adventure, I compiled this list of the 10 best space movies in the history of time and space. You get it?

1. Star Wars (all of them)
How could Star Wars not make the list? They’re classics! The best ones will always be the original three, there’s no doubt about that, but they all deliver spectacular views of computer-generated space. My favorite is Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi because of the excellent screenplay and the adorable ewoks.

2. Apollo 13 (1995)
Based on the true story of the ill-fated Apollo 13 flight, this film follows three astronauts as they struggle to return to Earth safely. You’re rooting for them until the very end.

3. WALL-E (2008)
Pixar really knows how to tug at our heart strings. The futuristic CGI film is a love story, but also speaks to larger issues. Watch this bit from WALL-E and EVE’s first date and try telling me it’s not adorable.

4. Aliens (1986)
With visuals ahead of its time, this movie is one of the scariest and most visually stunning cosmic movies made. It’s one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time.

5. Gravity (2013)
The Guardian calls this recent release centered on two astronauts floating in space an “incredibly exciting, visually amazing film.” Some say that the science involved in Gravity is wrong. Nevertheless it is still a gripping story with cool visuals.

6. Space Jam (1996)
Most ’90s kids will agree; this movie is one of the best space movies ever, and it’s criminally underrated. Real life meets Loony Tunes animation in this space classic. LeBron James recently stated on Twitter that he would like to make and star (no pun intended) in a sequel to Space Jam. Let’s hope he’s serious!

7. Star Trek (2009)
JJ Abrams bravely took on the role of reviving a beloved franchise, and he actually did a decent job. It’s not the most interesting story, but it has a great cast and cool special effects to make up for that.

8. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
If you can put up with the slow story line, you can thoroughly enjoy this incredible odyssey. Travel through space in this story that took us into the future and is now a fun look into the past. Did people actually think there would be this type of space travel by now?

9. Moon (2009)
Astronaut Sam Belle has a three year contract with Lunar Industries, where he is the sole employee working to harvest and send back to earth a precious resource for Earth’s power problems. After getting injured two weeks before the end of his stay, he makes an unexpected discovery that makes him question his very identity.

10. Armageddon (1998)
You will be on the edge of your seat waiting to see a misfit group save the planet as an asteroid heads toward Texas. This is one of those movies where you know good will prevail and they will succeed, but keeps you in suspense all the way.
