If the idea of co-habitating with a complete stranger seems like a daunting task, don’t worry. Just do some fun activities together and you will be on your way to making a new BFF.
Even if you already live with friends, give these activities a try! You will not only have fun, but you will develop good habits too.
Watch a TV Series or movies
My roommates and I dedicate hours in front of the TV to watch everything from indie movies to “Orange Is the New Black.” Watching shows and movies helped me figure out my roommate’s hobbies and interests and therefore what other things we can do together that we’ll both enjoy. Break the ice this way and maybe the same will happen to you.
Between having to worry about all the responsibilities most of us have, we often forget to think about food, let alone, eating healthy and exercising. If you exercise in pairs or groups, not only will it help keep you motivated, it could also be a chance to get to know your roommate. Your workout doesn’t have to be intense. You can simply walk around the track, sign up for Group X classes or walk your dog.
We all get busy during the school year. There will be days when the dishes are piled up in the sink and clothes will be thrown all over the floor of your room, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t make time to clean every once in a while. Keep things fun while maintaining cleanliness around your living space by delegating tasks and doing these chores together.
Think of this as your own roommate version of family dinners. Most of the time, my roommates and I make our own food during the week, but every now and then, we take turns cooking for each other or we eat out. We sit down and catch up on things, talk about life and even have venting sessions–like a real family. Not only will you be able to relieve some of your stress, this can also help you learn more than just your roommate’s year and major.
Attend campus events
Associated Students Inc. (ASI) and ASI Bronco Events and Activities Team (BEAT) plan and partner with so many events on campus throughout the year for you to enjoy. You and your roommates probably live so close to campus, so why not take advantage of it? Attend BroncoFusion and get some free hot dogs at the annual Hot Dog Caper event! Get to know your campus with your roommate.
Everyone’s roommate experience will be different from each other but start with some of these ideas and see how they work for you. Perhaps doing these things together as roomies can help you find more common ground and make living together easier and fun too.
