The Evolution of a CPP Student: Freshman Year

Welcome to Cal Poly Pomona! We’re happy to call you a Bronco. The next few years of your life will have a great impact on your future, so make the most of them. Here’s how to get the most out of your freshman year:

Declare your major: To ensure the best college experience possible, you should first be certain of your major. When applying for college, ensure that your interests and passions are reflected in your choice of major. This will make sure that you  enjoy your classes and encourage future involvement.

Live on Campus: According to the First Year Residential Requirement, all freshmen that graduated from a high school outside the local area will be required to complete a housing contract in order to enroll in classes.  However, this can be a defining experience for your freshman year. Attending University Housing Service’s Welcome Week can help you learn more about the campus and make new friends.  Living away from home can also allow you to enjoy freedom and independence.

Attend on-campus events: Take advantage of the close proximity and attend the wide variety of campus events, such as ASI B.E.A.T’s Midnight Madness. This will help you feel more connected to the campus community. You can also build your Bronco spirit by supporting Bronco Athletics at any home game.

Get involved: Getting involved is an essential component of the college experience. With over 200 clubs and organizations on campus to choose from, there is bound to be a club that is right for you. Attending club meetings is a great way to get involved on campus and meet new people with similar interests. The majority of club meetings on campus are during U-hour on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Build good study habits: College is unlike high school in that your parents or professors won’t be reminding you to complete your assignments. You have to be proactive and practice time management. Invest in a planner and write down important due dates. Complete assignments ahead of time and avoid procrastination. If you are struggling in a class, attend the professor’s office hours or ASI tutoring for additional help.

The college experience is one that it is unparalleled by any other. Be on the lookout for future articles on how to make the most of your time at Cal Poly Pomona for each year.
