‘Airblades’ cut costs, energy consumption in BSC

Continuing its goal to provide an environmentally friendly and sustainable experience to Cal Poly Pomona students, the Associated Students, Inc. (ASI) has outfitted the Bronco Student Center’s (BSC) restrooms with energy, waste and money-saving Dyson Airblade Hand Dryers.

The new systems are expected to cut ASI’s hand-drying energy usage by more than half, compared to its previous dependence on paper towels.

While paper towels used throughout the Bronco Student Center annually consume 2,652 kg/CO2e of energy, the Dyson Airblades are expected to consume approximately 1,115.30 kg/CO2e of energy per year.

At an annual operation cost of $6.68 for each unit’s yearly usage, ASI is expected to save nearly 98 percent of what it previously spent on paper towels – a cost amounting to more than $6,000 per year.

However, paper towel units will not phase out entirely. To address hygienic concerns, one paper towel dispenser is available in each restroom so individuals may cover their hands if they choose to do so.

“People were concerned because they didn’t want to touch the door handles,” said Manny Gaeta, ASI Maintenance Services Coordinator. “Also, if the Dyson fails for whatever reason, we want people to have a backup.”

The addition of sustainable practices to the BSC fall under ASI’s 2009-2014 Strategic Plan, Section 1b.
