How We Feel About Our Favorite Music Turning 10

How We Feel About Our Favorite Music Turning 10

Ten years is a long time. For most of us college students, that’s at least half of the time we’ve been alive. What’s even crazier is that some of our favorite musicians were releasing music during this time, including Arctic Monkeys’ “Favourite Worst Nightmare”, Kanye West’s “Graduation” and Fall Out Boy’s “Infinity on High”.

If the idea of some of your favorite music being a decade old creeps you out, it’s OK. Here’s a roundup of all the feels of realizing that your favorite music is turning 10.

Lost because where did the time go?

You’re casually scrolling through your favorite artist’s discography when you notice it, the little 2007 under the album name. Didn’t “Graduation” barely come out five years ago? Right??

Why was I listening to this as a kid?

Whether you were fully invested in the post-punk, emo scene of 2007 or you were bumping Nelly Furtado in elementary school, some of the stuff you were listening to was probably questionable and not meant for your young ears. Age appropriate or not, we all felt pretty cool singing along to “Maneater” as youngsters.

Shocked because THAT band is still around.

There are certain bands and musicians that had their moments of fame back in 2007 *cough, Soulja Boy* that we walked away from. We grew up and started listening to better music only to find that this one-hit wonder from our embarrassing music phase is still around, even if it’s just to cause beef.

You wonder, “What happened to that band?”

On the flip side, there are some bands who created iconic albums a decade ago only to fall into relative obscurity. And when I say “some bands”, I mean Chiodos.
They need to come back and bring more screamo-piano ballads with them.

In retrospect, some of your favorite songs are actually cringeworthy.

Everyone has gone through an embarrassing phase, or five, and our taste in music isn’t exempt from this! No matter how hard you try to hide those photos of you in all your scene kid glory or home videos of you doing the Soulja Boy, the truth will come out. It’s OK to acknowledge that some music that was cool back then is better left in the past.

You get defensive of your favorite songs.

Yeah, so “This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race” is 10 years old, but I don’t want anyone telling me. It sounds as new as it did a decade ago and Pete Wentz is still the hero of scene kid fashion. Don’t ruin the magic by aging it.

You don’t even realize some of these songs are 10.

Some songs are destined to stay in their decade and others can carry over, like anything Lupe Fiasco or Timbaland did in 2007. These are the songs you’ve had on repeat for, apparently, a decade. To this day, Lupe Fiasco’s “The Cool” can stand up to anything Kendrick Lamar has done.

Things get emotional, very emotional.

Once you’ve processed the fact that your favorite album is a decade old and that your taste in music may or may not have changed drastically, it’s time to reminisce on your top favorites and the memories you set to these songs. “Apologize” by OneRepublic is a great place to start being sentimental.
