Summer is slowly but surely coming to a close, and all those nights of city explorations and days of humid, sun-kissed fun are but a distant memory disappearing from our rear view mirrors. While the end of summer can be a sad one at best, it’s also incredibly bittersweet because a new season brings new possibilities and most importantly, new campus events.
To commemorate summer’s end, below is a list of things to look forward to this upcoming fall quarter at Cal Poly Pomona (CPP).
Another new school year, another BroncoFusion! BroncoFusion is a three-day event for first-year and incoming CPP students that began on Wednesday, Sept. 21 and ends tonight, Friday, Sept. 23 with a BroncoFusion concert. The first few days give students a chance to attend volunteer and job fairs, campus resource fairs and take advantage of information booths. This is all capped off with a club fair, carnival rides, drool-worthy food trucks, soccer games and the BroncoFusion concert at Bronco Commons tonight. DJ Carnage will be headlining this year’s BroncoFusion, along with guest artist Super Duper KYLE, and entry will be $5 for students and $10 for guests. For more details and to purchase tickets, please check your CPP student email inbox.
BSC Open House
BSC Open House gives students the opportunity to learn more about the various resources the Bronco Student Center (BSC, Bldg. 35) has to offer, so it’s in your best interest to make it out on Thursday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Swing by for a chance to win a bunch of swag items and to learn more about all the resources the BSC houses: Center Court and all its food options; Solaris Lounge to eat, meet, study and play; ASI Human Resources for student job opportunities, ASI Student Government and much more.
Don’t forget to snag one of our free student planners during the open house! These babies go fast.
Join ASI Campus Recreation for Rexpo on Tuesday, Oct. 4 during U-hour (noon to 1 p.m.) at University Park. The event gives students the opportunity to learn more about Campus Rec’s Aquatics, Adventures, Fitness and Intramural (IM) Sports programs offered at the Bronco Recreation and Intramural Complex (BRIC, Bldg. 42) by demoing various equipment, classes and more. Activity and information booths will also be available, and participants have the chance to be entered into an opportunity drawing to win a free Hydro Flask, Bluetooth headphones and more.
Hot Dog Caper
Music and free hot dogs and tabling events—oh my. Hot Dog Caper is quite literally what it sounds like— put on by Cal Poly Pomona Foundation Inc., the event features free hot dogs, chips, Popsicles, soda, live music and various tabling booths from different companies and organizations. Do not underestimate how huge this event truly is; join us at University Park on Thursday, Oct. 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. to experience the chaotic but delicious fray.
Is it even truly fall if pumpkins aren’t involved? Grab your pumpkin-spiced everythings, slip on your fuzzy socks and attend CPP’s annual Pumpkin Festival, which takes place earlier this year during the weekend of October 8-9. The event features a pumpkin patch for $5 a pop, a corn maze to navigate, horse rides to channel your inner child who always wanted a pony, good eats and much more. Admission is $4 for adults and $3 for children ages 2-12. The Insect Fair will also be located at the festival this year, but admission will be separate. Volunteers are needed, so visit the website for more information and to learn more about volunteer opportunities.
ASI Presents: The Student Experience
ASI Presents: The Student Experience is one of the newer items on the list and one you simply cannot miss. For the first time, ASI’s Marketing, Design and Public Relations (MDPR) department—one that’s often operating in the background of many ASI campus events—is putting on an event of their own to give students old and new the resources to jumpstart their involvement with ASI; the event is in conjunction with ASI’s brand new campaign, titled “You Belong Here.” Join ASI MDPR on Thursday, Oct. 27 from noon to 1 p.m. at the BSC, Ursa Major AB (Bldg. 35-2611) to learn more. Did we mention there’ll be free food and giveaways?
Put on your most comfortable pair of tennis shoes and take part in this 5K run/walk around our scenic campus. Held annually, Matt’s Run is a charity marathon that raises money for student scholarships; the event honors late communication student Matthew Myers who was struck by a car on campus in 2005. Participants of all ages and levels are encouraged to attend the walk/run, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17. Runners and walkers are also encouraged to don their favorite superhero costumes. An awards ceremony will take place after the race, in which top finishers and winners of the Myers Cup (most spirited and enthusiastic group) are rewarded.
Early registration is $20 for students and $35 for adults; day-of-event registration is an additional $5. Visit the website to register for the event or become a volunteer.
