Craig Shibley: AV Coordinator

Craig Shibley: AV Coordinator

1. How did you get your start in the industry?

I started out in music production, earning a certificate in Recording Arts and working in recording and live sound environments. Most of my AV experience started with volunteering at my church, which progressed into a paid position at my church and eventually a full time job with an AV company.

2. What is your position at ASI?

AV Coordinator

3. How long have you been in ASI?

A little over two months. I started in December 2010.

4. What type of background experience did you have prior to working with ASI?

With my previous company, I worked in many different environments all related to the AV industry. I did everything from large concerts to single microphone presentations, with everything in between. It also gave me the opportunity to work in different buildings, mainly hotels, and troubleshoot any problems that would occur when working in multiple locations.

Prior to that, I worked in the studio environment recording bands, voiceovers for cartoons, and books on CD.

5. Any significant achievements you’d like to mention?

I have the sound engineering credit to the cartoon Olivia, currently airing on Nick Jr.

6. What do you hope to bring to ASI that hasn’t been done before?

I would love to see the music production program integrated into what we do with AV at ASI, whether it is just be with volunteering or being able to give students lab hours for helping out and using the equipment.

7. What are your plans for the upcoming 2011-2012 academic school year?

To learn the ropes! I have two great seasoned student employees that I work with that will be graduating in spring. So, I want to learn what I can about events from them and then transfer that to my new hires once they are gone.

8. Tell us a little about yourself…any childhood or college memories?

I have been married since September ’09 and live in Ontario, CA. When I’m not working I am very involved with my church and I am a huge baseball fan. Go Halos!

Although I wasn’t a musician, I listened to music from a very critical and technical standpoint at a very young age. That love for music and desire to understand how it was produced is what led me to pursue my certificate in recording and ultimately, the AV industry.

9. Favorite musician? Why?

Ryan Adams. His music covers a wide variety of styles and it’s all great. He is a great guitarist, singer, lyricist and songwriter.

10. If you can personally work with any musician, who would it be and why?

I would love to be a part of a project with the band Mute Math. Their live show is very intense in all aspects of sound, lighting, and video. That would be a cool live project to be a part of. In the studio, working with them would be even better because of how creative their style is and what new things they bring to recording.
